February #GoalGetter2013 Checkin

I realize that February is the shortest month but it really seemed to fly by this year.  And so far, March has lived up to it’s in like a lion, out like a lamb stereotype.  Thanks to getting diagnosed with bronchitis and sinusitis, I have been down for the count.  Not only have I been cooped up in my house since Thursday, I haven’t done any workouts – literally ZERO – since the marathon last Sunday.  This is also the longest I’ve ever missed work.  My house is starting to feel like a prison and I’m beyond stir crazy.

Now that it’s March, it means I say goodbye to my February goals and hello to March goals.

goalgetter2013

Here’s how I did on my February Goals:

Run marathon #2 aka Rock-n-Roll New Orleans.  I don’t have an official time goal.  I want to finish somewhere in the 4:20s.

  • Goal accomplished.  And while I wanted to finish in the 4:20s I actually finished with 4:18:50!  If you missed my race recap you can find part 1 here and part 2 here.

Love this guy so much!{best husband ever}

GotSub 2 hour 1/2 marathon (PR). I’m not sure if this is going to happen. With marathon training, I’ve been focusing more on endurance then speed so I’m not sure if I’m conditioned enough to run a sub 2 but I’m going to give my best effort.

Spend more time in the kitchen.  These past few months I have gotten way too comfortable with blending my meals (smoothies / protein shakes) instead of taking time to cook something.  This often leaves hubby hanging for supper which means he seizes the opportunity to get fast food. #WifeFail

  • Fail.  While I did cook more then I have been, I still didn’t do a great job with this.  Sorry hubby.

Here are my March goals:

  • Get better!! This one may seem like a silly goal but it’s super important right now.  I haven’t been this sick in years and it’s really messing with me mentally.  I feel like I’ve regressed, fitness wise, tremendously.
  • Spend more time in the kitchen. Yep, I putting this one back on my list; however, I’m going to be more specific this time.  I will make at least one meal the both of us can enjoy.  One of the reasons I find this such of a struggle is due to the fact that Jody aka the hubster refuses to eat clean.  After 1 1/2 years of clean eating, I still haven’t been able to get him on the bandwagon.
  • Enjoy my next half marathon.  At the end of the month I will be running the Viking Half Marathon and I just want to have fun.  I’m not worried about time goals or PRs.  Just whatever happens, happens.
  • Cross train, cross train, cross train! Now that I’m not training for a marathon (first time since last July) I can focus my attention on cross training without fear of injury.  I will be hitting the weight machines pretty hard, cycling my little legs and {of course} still getting in my running – just not 40 miles a week worth of running.
  • Focus more on my spirituality.  I have dropped the ball big time with my devotions and Bible reading in the past few months.  Instead of getting up and getting into His word, I find myself jumping onto the computer to check the blog/social media/my favorite bloggers.  My priorities definitely need re-arranging.

Haven’t joined the #GoalGetter2013 challenge yet? It’s never too late to get started working towards a better you.  Check out this introduction post and then join some of my favorite blends (bloggers + friends = blends) as we work toward achieving our 2013 goals!  This is your #GoalGetter2013 team:

Question:  How are you coming with your goals? What are you wanting to accomplish in March?

January #GoalGetter2013 Check-in

In case you haven’t realized it yet, today is first day of February.  So that means four things.

  1. Tomorrow is Groundhog day.  Now that I live in the South, this doesn’t mean much any more but to my Northern friends, it’s still a fun tradition.  I’m betting good old Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow.
  2. This is officially marathon month – EEK!
  3. The Super Bowl is this weekend.  I’m not going to pretend I actually follow football, but I will be cheering on SF.
  4. It’s time to recap my January goal.  (Yep, I only had one.)
How could anyone care more about a football game then this cute little guy? It's the overbite that does it for me.

But before I recap my January goal, I want to brag for just a sec.  That sounded totally narcissistic, didn’t it?  Anyways, I had a killer training month! I logged a total of 205 (+change) miles in January. I ran 141 miles and cycled 60.  Woot-woot!! Alright, I’m done patting myself on the back and can now move into the rest of the post.

If you remember, some of my fellow blends (bloggers + friends = blends) came up with a fun Instagram challenge to keep us on track with our 2013 goals.

goalgetter2013

My goal for January was to increase my upper body strength.  If you remember I tried to increase my upper body strength last year through my 100 Pushup fail challenge.

But I didn’t see any visible results.  When something doesn’t work for you, don’t quit.  Try something new.  So to the drawing board I went to create a new plan of attack and came up with Big Blue, my new tool for success.  I also set mini goals of going to the gym once a week to hit up the weight machines.

How did I do??

Taken: 1/29/13Ignore my awesomely sweaty self. That's what 7 miles of speed work does to me.

I by no means turned into the Incredible Hulk but I’m so proud of my baby biceps! Might not look like much, but there was a lot of hard work that went into that teeny-tiny bulge.

Even though January’s firmly in the rear-view mirror, I’m not giving up on my strength goal.  This is just the beginning of progress.  I have a whole year to develop the muscle tone I want. Watch out 2013, I’m coming for you!

February’s Goals:

  1. Run marathon #2 aka Rock-n-Roll New Orleans.  I don’t have an official time goal.  I want to finish somewhere in the 4:20s.
  2. Sub 2 hour 1/2 marathon (PR). I’m not sure if this is going to happen. With marathon training, I’ve been focusing more on endurance then speed so I’m not sure if I’m conditioned enough to run a sub 2 but I’m going to give my best effort.

Those seem totally doable.  I have a 20 mile run on tap for tomorrow and then bring on the taper! How did this marathon sneak up on me? It seems like just yesterday I was just starting to train for it.

Question:  Do you think Punxsutawney Phil will see his shadow?  Who do you want to win the Super Bowl?

#GoalGetter2013

Sometimes I think I may be the only person in the world who doesn’t mind Mondays.  Most Mondays that is.  After a particularly lovely weekend I have trouble embracing the newness of the week but, let’s face it, there’s no stopping it.  This would be one of those weekends.  I had a great 16 mile run with my running girls on Saturday and then Sunday my hubby and I went for a 20 mile bike ride.  I’m not going to lie, it was a pretty blissful weekend.

Beautiful sunrise from my run.

Last month I had a ton of fun with some fantastic blends (blogging friends) putting together a daily photo challenge.  And, WOW – y’all blew us away at your enthusiasm with the #holidayaday photo challenge.  We had over 6,000 pictures uploaded to Instagram with the #holidayaday hashtag!

So we figured why stop in December? Why not continue this challenge into the new year AND help encourage you with your New Year’s resolutions.  We decided right off the bat that doing a daily photo challenge wouldn’t be practical so we went back to the drawing board and TA-DA!! came up with:

goalgetter2013

Introducing #goalgetter2013.  This is an easy-peesy, one photo a month challenge designed to help keep you accountable for the goals you want to achieve in 2013.  What you do is pick a goal each month and then snap a picture of you working towards your goal. For example, if you’re goal is to eat healthier, snap a picture of you noshing on those veggies.  Want to be a faster runner? Snap a picture after you’ve crushed your run.  Easy, right? Don’t feel like you can only take one picture a month though, I know we’d all love to see as many pictures as you little goal-getting heart desires to upload.

Throughout the year we’ll be checking in on your #goalgetter2013 progress.  We’ll have fun progress updates and maybe even a surprise giveaway or two so make sure to follow us via our blogs and on Instagram.

And for even more accountability, you can subscribe to our monthly newsletter.  Each month we’ll send out a reminder newsletter with motivational tips, success stories, and more.  I can’t wait to see what goals you have planned for 2013!  What are you waiting for?  Take the pledge today and go get your goals!

Catching Up

Whew! Is it really Monday, already?? Who else wants a do-over of the weekend?  I got back Saturday afternoon from a work trip to Washington, DC, and I still haven’t really caught up on every thing that went on while I was gone.  For those of you that are new to my blog, in real life I work with victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.  It’s a job that I love and one where I really feel I’m contributing to the greater good of others.   One of the things I have to do to stay in compliance with various grants is attending conferences periodically; so off to DC I went.

Greetings from the White House.Or in my case. From outside the White House like every other tourist.

It was a good conference, not great (it was entirely bureaucratic), but it’s always nice to be around others who are driven by the same passion. We did have at least one really interesting day, but it wasn’t because of the conference.  It was because of a bomb threat at the Dept. of Justice building.  The entire city block -hotels, restaurants, businesses- were evacuated for 2 1/2 hours until they determined it was just a hoax.  I think I would have found some humor in it if I had at least been able to grab a jacket.  DC in November without a jacket is COLD!

This was as close as I could get to the action. What you don't see is the million and one unmarked cars that showed up.

I have a 1/2 marathon next week so I made sure to get some running in; not as much as I wanted but that’s ok.  I wasn’t comfortable running outside at night in DC so that meant treadmill miles….And I learned the hard way that the hotel treadmills are set to shut down after 60 minutes of use.  I was in a really good groove on the ‘mill when all the sudden it shut down.  Has this ever happened to you? I was pretty irritated but started it back up and finished my run.

It's not what I'm used to, but it got the job done just fine.

Does anyone else have trouble taking self portraits? I HATE doing this.

Post 7 mile treadmill run.

I also ate waaaaay too much in DC; mostly healthy, but still too much.

Ok, now for the catching up part….

The 100 Pushup Challenge.  Oy!! This is going to be the death of me! I just finished week 3 (out of 6) and man, oh, man it is challenging. No pun intended.  I really am not happy with this challenge and don’t see much improvement, visually at least.  I’m going to stick it out but I don’t think I’d recommend it.

The #Holidayaday Instagram Challenge.  This challenge started Saturday and has taken off better then we (the girls that created it and myself) could have ever anticipated!  By Saturday night, we already had over 600 photos with Day 1’s theme #festive.  If you haven’t joined the challenge, what are you waiting for? It’s just a fun way to get more involved with social media.

The 1/2 marathon this weekend.  I’m running the inaugural Woman’s Half Marathon this Sunday and I don’t feel prepared for it at all.  Between the foot pain I’ve been having and the reduced mileage, I know that this will not be a PR race.  But that’s ok, not every race has to be a PR.  I’m going to run it in memory of my Aunt Kathy who died from ovarian cancer in 2003.

Marathon #2 training.  Today marks the 5th week of training for the Rock-n-Roll marathon in February.  I’ve been kind of silent on the training updates but that’s because there really have been any worth talking about.  The first month’s mileage was really low which was great; it gave me time to recover after the Marine Corps Marathon.  I’m looking forward to it intensifying soon; I’m really missing my long (15+ miles) runs.  On the downside, I’m really worried that this dang foot pain is going to interfere with my marathon plans.  I’ve made promises to my husband and running girls to get it checked out after the 1/2 if it doesn’t go away.  I think I’m going to try a chiropractor first to see if it’s an alignment issue and if that doesn’t work, off to the doctor.  I’m pretty worried about hearing the words ‘stress fracture’ and ‘no running’.

Ok, that’s all I have.  I know that was a lot of info but do you feel caught up? Sorry I crammed everything into one post.  I won’t do that again. Hopefully.

Question:  How was your weekend? Any fun races, holiday events? Or did you just relax and unwind?

December Photo a Day Challenge

I hate to point out the obvious, but it’s almost December!  Seriously, Christmas is in 27ish days and I’m just beginning my holiday shopping.  It’s time to deck the halls, trim the trees, sing off-tune to strangers, and eat waaaaay to much! Ok, maybe not so much on singing off-tune to strangers; I don’t have enough bail money for each of you.

Busy is an understatement for December, right? Well here’s something else to add to your calendar….A holiday photo a day challenge!  At least it’s a fun something to add to your calendar.  Spearheaded by Abby from Back at Square Zero, and after lots of e-mails back and forth between some awesome blogging girlfriends, we came up with an Instagram #holidayaday challenge for you.

Who doesn’t love a challenge? Well this one is simple.  You just use the chart above, snap a picture of whatever your heart chooses that goes along with the theme and then upload it to Instagram/Twitter/Facebook with the hashtag #holidayaday.  Don’t forget to tag all of us, too. We want to see what creative / fun pictures you come up with!  We even have an event page set up where you can get daily reminders and connect with other #holidayaday(ers)!

Want to see our creative #holidayaday genius in action? Make sure to follow each of these fantabulous ladies via their blog & Instagram.

Question:  Have you ever participated in a photo a day challenge?
